Baked Sour Cream Donuts with Apple
Baked Sour Cream Donut Recipe
This baked sour cream donut recipe is really exciting for me to share today. When I was in my 20’s (last week I swear) I use to make all kinds of donuts. Inexpensive and everyone raved about them, unfortunately frying the donuts started to make me feel sick so I gave up making them. Then I saw a baked donut pan on our last trip to the USA and could not wait to try and bake some.
How Are They Compared to Their Fried Version?
The baked donuts are smaller then the original donuts but they are very pretty. I like the flavour of them better as they aren’t at all greasy. They are quite a bit drier than their fried counterparts.
The first time I tried to make baked sour cream donuts I found them too dry. I added sour cream and apple and these ones are much moister. Overall we like them, I prefer them to the fried kind (no grease), but they are drier and they need the glaze.
Baked Sour Cream and Apple Donut Recipe
Ingredients
4 3/4 cups flour
1 1/4 tbsp baking powder
3 tsp salt
2 apples
1 tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp butter
5 egg yolks
1 1/2 cups sour cream
Donut Glaze
3 cups icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup of milk
Baked Sour Cream Donut Directions
In a medium sized bowl add flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix together really well so the baking powder is distributed throughout. Set aside.
Peel and core the apples. Cut the apples into small bits. Place the apple bits, cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl. Stir to coat the apples and set aside.
Grease a large bowl and set aside.
Using your mixer with the paddle attachment add the butter and egg yolks.
Beat together about 3 minutes until it is fluffy and a light yellow colour.
Then add the sour cream. Mix until blended.
Making the Donut Dough
Add the apples to the dry ingredients, stir.
With the mixer on low, slowly add the dry ingredients to the butter/sour cream mixture a little bit at a time. Make sure the flour is incorporated before adding the next spoonful.
When the dough is mixed transfer to the buttered bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least an hour.
I took this time to clean up my kitchen and do the dishes.
Roll and Cut the Baked Sour Cream Donuts
Preheat oven to 350 F.
This is really the best part. No grease, no deep fat frying fire hazard, no grease splattered clothes, counters etc.
On a floured counter roll out your dough until it’s about an inch thick.
Cut the dough with a donut cutter and place the cut dough into a greased baking donut pan.
Bake at 350F for between 20-25 minutes. Until the donuts are golden, do not overbake.
Making the Donut Glaze
Place the icing sugar and the vanilla in a bowl. Stir in the milka little bit at a time until it’s a consistency you like. The thinner the glaze the less sweet the donuts will be.
As soon as the donuts are baked place the warm donut into the glaze. Flip over to do the other side and place on a rack to cool.
Like I said earlier. I find these donuts to be really good, but a bit drier than their fried cousins. I served mine with coffee and we really enjoyed them.
Have a great weekend.
