DIY Rustic Wooden Sign Frosty’s Baby Picture

In Edmonton the snowfall season is ridiculously long..  In an attempt to embrace it, this year I am decorating for Christmas in a snow and ice theme.  Including this DIY Frosty’s baby picture sign.

This rustic DIY Christmas with wording sign is so easy it takes half an hour to make, other than waiting for the stain to dry.

xYou can vary this sign to any size or colour you like, but for a rustic feel this one has a simple wood background. You could do the same thing with plywood or add a simple frame to it.

To make this DIY Christmas wood sign you will need:

[one-half-first]

10 ” piece of 2 by 12 lumber

220 grit sandpaper

[/one-half-first]
[one-half]

Tiny portion of dark wood stain

Silver Sharpee or White Paint pen

[/one-half]

Stain the  Wood Background

This board is a leftover from when we were replacing a stair on the back deck, if you do any DIY at home you likely have some little chunk of wood in your cut pile. This piece is a rescue from our cut pile and didn’t even need cutting.  I hope you can avoid buying lumber and hopefully have some piece of wood lazing around, it doesn’t matter what size your sign is, just make sure it is thick enough to stand up on its own.

This sign only uses a few tablespoons of dark stain.  Our stain is leftover from our dining room table upcycle.  Stain (or paint) your wood according to the directions that came with your product.  Let dry really well.

Add the Snowflake

This wood snowflake was originally grey so I gave it a quick makeover using white chalk paint.  Of course, if you like your snowflake you can skip the painting. Let dry.

Glue the snowflake to the wood background.

Add the Saying

Print out the frosty’s first pic printable.  If you want to make one in a different size the font is  Daddy Longlegs font

Place the printable with the lettering facing outside on a window.  This will help you to see the backside of the print.  Trace the lettering with white chalk.

Place the printable chalk side down on to the wood surface and rub.  The chalk will transfer enough that you can see it. I then retrace it with chalk so I can see what I am doing.  It is possible you can skip this step.
