Fall Mason Decor Idea for Fall

Mason jars crafts continue to be a fun and inexpensive fall decor idea.  To make this Gather centerpiece I started by reusing a wood centerpiece from Spring.  The instructions for building a mason jar centerpiece are in the earlier post.

In today post I am going to show you an easy yet pretty way to update a simple wood box for fall using a few supplies and very little effort.

Supplies

Other than the wood box you will need some grey paint, dollar store floral foam for the bases, glass jars, household salt, tea candles and moss.  The remaining decorations can be what you have on hand.  I shopped at home and grabbed some  DIY cotton boles, a chalk painted pumpkin, and assorted nuts.  You could also use pinecones.

Silhouette Method

Depending on the wooden box you have,  paint it white and grey.  Purchase the silhouette pattern for Gather and create a stencil by cutting the word out on freezer paper.

Outline the Gather using the stencil and a pencil.  Remove the stencil and then hand paint the letters with acrylic paint and a small brush.

Chalk Transfer Method

If you don’t have a cutter you can still do this project by transferring letters using Word and chalk.

Create Gather on whatever computer program you prefer.  Flip the letters horizontally so they are backward and print.

Place the printout up against a window, backside towards you.  This helps you see the letters. Carefully fill in the letters using chalk.  Once it is covered in chalk,  place it chalk side down on your wood and rub.

You will have enough of an outline that you can outline the letters and then paint.

 I have used this method for several projects,  it takes longer than a cutting machine but it works very well.

Mason Jar Display

Now the fun easy part.

Instead of using the antique jars for vases this time I used them as candle holders.

Place the styrofoam at 2″, 3″ and 4″ heights, this will stagger the jar heights.  You can use any styrofoam you have available, or small bits of wood.  The measurements don’t have to be exact as long as the height differences are the same.  Place the styrofoam at one end of the box snuggled right next to each other.

Fill each jar with three inches of salt, then add little tea lights.  Place the jars on top of the styrofoam.

Tie a bow around the end of the box.  For this centerpiece I used burlap, but a pretty muslin bow would work as well.

To play on the word Gather, gather a bunch of little fall items, cones, nuts, mini pumpkins, acorns, cotton bolls. I had a little basket so I used it as well.   If you want to use cotton bolls I have a popular tutorial on how to make your own.

To save on the amount of moss you need, fill the box with crumpled tissue paper, parchment paper,  tea towels whatever you can think of that you have on hand.

Place the moss on top making sure to cover all the tissue paper.  Decorate with your gathered items.

I placed this by the front door in the entry foyer as it matches the key cabinet we currently have in the front foyer.

Neutral colours are so bright and cheerful for fall, the shine off the metallics and the white really adds some light to the shortening days.
