How to Farmhouse Christmas Stockings with Drop Cloth and Buffalo Check

These DIY Christmas stockings feature flirty buffalo check pleats and are designed extra long with the silhouette of a tall ladies boot.  These aren’t for the men in your life, but its often just so nice to have something special that’s obviously for us girls.

Today is the final day of this year’s 12 Days of Christmas.  It has been so much fun that I am sad to see it end.  So much Christmas inspiration and creativity.  If these feminine farmhouses styled DIY Christmas stockings aren’t your style I am certain there are several other Christmas stocking ideas you will like at the end of my post.

If you’re having guests over for Christmas how about hanging these in their room and filling them with some guest treats.  Little special shampoo bottles, a Christmas magazine, and some chocolates of course, maybe there own mug.

The Christmas stockings are made with bleached drop cloth fabric and buffalo check cotton, but you could make them with muslin or linen fabric as well.

Buffalo Check Christmas Stockings Tutorial

Supplies

1 Metre (yard) bleached drop cloth or muslin

1/4 Meter (yard) 1- inch check sized buffalo check cotton ( at least 57″ wide)

The Pattern

Make the Pattern

You can tape the printed pieces together if you prefer, but I traced the stocking pattern out onto parchment paper.  Whatever you find easier.

Cutting the Fabric

Fold your drop cloth in half lengthwise.   Pin the actual stocking pattern along the open seam. That gives you a double thickness and two stocking pieces.

Pin the quarter round pattern along the fold of the fabric.

Cut out the stocking and the quarter round patterns.  Then repin the quarter round pattern and cut out a second half circle.

Seal the edges of your fabric by sewing all around the fabric with a zig zag stitch or a serger.

You need to measure and cut out two strips.

Cut out one strip on the drop cloth 4″ high and at least 47″ wide.  If you have longer fabric you can make it longer.  The extra fabric will just lengthen the bow ties.

Cut another strip, this time from the buffalo check  4″ by 57″ long.  Make sure it is cut right along the squares, don’t halve them.

The strips do not need to be zigzag finished.

Preparing the Ties

Starting the long strip of drop cloth fabric.  Iron the fabric flat.  Fold over both short ends of your strip and press well, then fold over narrow seams along the other two long edges.  Finally fold the strip in half and press very well.  Set aside.

Making the Buffalo Check Pleats

I suggested using one inch squared buffalo check fabric as it makes this easy to do.  Cut Fold your fabric in half along the one-inch pattern your piece will be two inches wide.  Press very well.

To make the pleats start at one end and fold up matching the colours,  Black to black then white to white,  Iron as you go until you reach the other end.  It sounds fussier than it is, the picture shows what I mean.

Place it on the sewing machine and sew a seam lengthwise.  Place your seam 3/8 inch from the first check pattern.

Undoubtedly your ironed pleats will unfold while sewing, just refold them along the pleats,  before you place them under the sewing foot.

Once sewn trim the edge and run a zig-zag stitch to seal the ends.

Making the DIY Christmas Stocking Cuff

Place one-half round of fabric good side up, fit your pleats along the outer edge with the pleats facing inwards.

Pin the buffalo check to the lower drop cloth fabric starting at the two ends.  Adjust the fabric around the circle’s edge so that it fits evenly.  Once you like the placement, pin in place away from the sewing edge just to hold your pleats in place.

Place the second round on top good side down and pin the fabric very well along the sewing edge.  Sew along the round seam leaving the flat edge open.

Turn right side out and press.

Congratulations you have most of the work done.  Now, all we do is put the pieces together.

Attaching the Cuff to the DIY Christmas Stocking

Take the two pieces of stocking drop cloth, good sides facing towards each other.  Pin and sew a 3/8 seam around the stocking leaving the top open.  I did this one low speed so that I could work my way around the corners,  The seams are small and neat so I did not need to snip them afterward.   Turn your stocking right side out and press.

Fold your pleated boot cuff in half to find the center of the long flat seam.  Line up the center of the cuff to the front seam of the stocking and pin.  Make sure to leave the pleats unpinned.

Sew the top of the cuff to the top seam of the stocking.  Don’t sew the pleats.

Adding the Ties

Fold the long strip of drop cloth in half to find the center.  Again line it up with the front center of the stocking.  Wrap the tie around the top of your stocking making sure about half the fabric is over the stocking.

Starting at the front and working along one side pin your ties in place.  When you reach the pleats, place the pleat inside the strip and pin.

I found it easier to sew starting in the middle and sew towards the pleat on one side first and then return to sew the other side.

Repeat the process in the other direction starting from the front middle but this time pin as much of the pleat as needed to encircle the top of your stocking.  Once pinned sew.

The back of your stocking will look like this once finished.  Doing it this way the entire top seam of the stocking is covered.

I realize that this tutorial is long,  I could have skipped some of the detail to make it look as easy as it is to make.   Please don’t let the length of the tutorial discourage you from making them.  They are both easy and inexpensive to make.
