Farmhouse Shelf with Window Curtain Rod

Add Extra Decor to a Bedroom with a Farmhouse Shelf

This is the last of the projects for the farmhouse room for my granddaughters.   I searched high and low driving to several nearby small country gift shops to find these little farmhouse decor pieces.  They are worth the effort, I love how they look on the farmhouse shelf.

Our little guest bedroom was most likely designed as a child’s room;  a double bed makes it seem pretty tiny.  I have an average sized antique dresser in the room and there really isn’t room for anything more.

I wanted more area for decor and this little shelf was my solution.  It sits up high enough to be out of the way.  You see it when you enter the room and it takes up no floor space.  I will be able to display all types of seasonal decor safely out of the reach of little people.

Making the Window Treatment Shelf

Hubs was away at work so instead of waiting for him to make the shelf, I took some short cuts and made it myself.

Before heading to Lowes I measured my window width (48 inches).

I purchased two premade corbels that would accommodate a curtain rod for $8.00 each.

The corbels were 7 inches deep so I bought a 1 by 8″ board. Once home I cut the board to 53 inches to allow for overhang past the window.  (I used the chop saw alone for the first time.)

Luckily we already had a rod that would fit. I  spray painted it white. (We store all kinds of goodies in the garage rafters.)

I sanded the corbels and wood very well and then applied two layers of white stain.

Attaching the Farmhouse Shelf

By far the hardest part was mounting the shelf to the wall.  I had to use a stud finder to make sure there was a stud behind the gyproc to support the weight of the shelf.  The corbels had to be as close to the window trim as possible and provide the support necessary. I put a mark where the holes would be, rechecked it a couple of times, then remeasured to make sure everything was level.  Finally, I drilled some small holes into the gyproc that hit the stud.  I put in the mounting screws and then slid on the premade corbels.

Once the corbels were attached I added glue to the top portion, placed the shelf and slid in the curtain rod.

Here is the start of the farmhouse summer decor I found for the room.  It includes a little frame with this cute printable graphic I found on  House of Hawthorns.

Two small pieces of farmhouse decor, one is a small picture frame, and the other is a small galvanized container holding greenery. The two accessories are sitting ontop of a DIY window shelf curtain rod combo made from wood and painted white.

All that is left is to take a couple days off and have the girls over to enjoy some Grama time and their new room.
