Craft Room Inspiration for a Budget DIY Makeover
Craft Room Ideas to Ponder
Right now I am designing a budget conscious craft room, so I am collecting a group of craft room ideas. This post contains a collection of my favorite craft room ideas I want to incorporate into a swanky new craft room. All of these ideas are budget conscious and would make any woman’s craft room inspiring and creative. Hopefully someday soon!
Here’s the list of my needs. Please comment if you think I am missing something.
Cost under $500 for materials ( in Canadian prices that’s not much)
Include my office area
Be pretty enough to inspire me
Organized, clutter free
Storage area for projects waiting to be refurbished
Large work surface
Storage for all my supplies and more to come
Bulletin board of some sort
Once we moved into this new home I allowed myself to gather and store more craft items. Currently, I have a dresser and some shelves downstairs to hold all my stuff. Before that my craft supplies were stored in a couple of large rubber made containers. Without having a designated place for craft supplies, I purchased materials for the project I was working on and threw away the leftovers. Expensive way to do it, but it kept the clutter somewhat controlled. Finally, I am ready to tackle this space and make it my personal work area. Here are some stunning examples, I am sure you’re going to enjoy.
Craft Table
This table is perfect, large with storage underneath. I love the size of it. Can you image wrapping gifts on this? Not sure I can afford all this wood material, but I will try to come up with something this size.

Currently, I have some espresso Ikea Hemnes shelves in need of a makeover. I will paint them to match, but these shelves are nicer because of the differently sized cubicles. Don’t you just love how she stores her wool in here? Well all her craft storage ideas are pretty.

The long working counter in this room and the shelves for paper and various sizes of the storage units. Everything is so pretty and organized, her scrapbook paper organization is what first caught my eye.

A Peg Board
I want a pegboard to put half completed projects on, or maybe pin up some ideas. I love this one because framed and pretty in the soft lilac. My concern about a peg board is clutter. I don’t want it to look cluttery. Do you guys like the pegboard idea?
In our garage, I talked Hubs into putting pegboard down one entire wall and its wonderful for rakes, wrenches, hoses, you can find everything, but it isn’t pretty. I am thinking stencil or vinyl designs on the pegboard and a frame if the budget allows. I haven’t quite decided if I will install one.

I love motivational art, large letters saying Create, or Sew maybe. That’s not enough though, I think motivational cheerful art and something very feminine will be wonderful. Love both these ideas, you could use them to define different areas, a sewing room, the home office or a craft area.a

These pretty crystal drawer pulls are $9.99 each at Lowes, I just treated myself to four to use on this DIY ironing board. Guess I will have to have to be on the lookout for some old ones at estate sales, or maybe the next time I go to the United States because these are really nice.

Ironing
We may not enjoy it, but if you work with fabric your ironing, a lot. Worse yet you’re ruining your ironing board with adhesives, interfacing and pin holes. On the blog, I have already made this DIY Ironing board to alleviate the problem, and it gives me a wider surface to work on. I think you would love to have one in your craft space.

Oh for magic wands to exist, this room is as close to what I envision as possible given the items I have and my budget. She has done a beautiful job. That flounce table curtain is swoon-worthy, as is the pretty yellow chandelier.

No craft room makeover would be complete without inspiration from Claire and Heartmade UK. Her style is breathtaking to me. Love the vintage pink dress, vintage suitcases for storage, it’s such a beautiful hobby room area. Everything about this room says this is a woman’s workspace.
Hearthandmade.co.uk – Craft Room
We’re going to finish a large table this week and hopefully a storage area for the unfinished projects, I have some dining room chairs, a lantern with broken glass, a broken antique shelf unit and some other projects that need hiding until they receive their makeovers. Hopefully, I can get the shelves painted soon, which means taking off dozens of dollar store containers.

What a sweet thing to say Mary. It is nice to create an atmosphere for myself again. You would have laughed if you saw the bedroom I had when I was on my own. It was certainly all Leanna.

Wow, girl, you & I are on the same wavelength! I don’t think I saw a picture I didn’t like! I especially love that huge table that was one of the first photos. I don’t know where I would PUT it, but I love it. It would be great for crafts or shipping packages, which I have to do a lot since I have an Etsy shop. But the other photos of creative spaces are wonderful. Love that framed pegboard too.
Congrats on the Etsy shop Florence. I hope to eventually get smooth enough at all the blogging tasks to be able branch out a bit.
A huge table would be great for a shop. I use to use the big boardroom to generate the clients welcome packages etc. So nice to piling things into a workflow.

Lots of wonderful ideas here, and pretty pictures!! You didn’t mention the type of crafting you do……sewing, painting, carving, knitting, quilting, book binding, paper crafts, jewelry design………?? Each one requires different storage solutions and type of tables.
My studio is not that pretty, but sure is useful in how it is set up. I bought a standard sturdy table, 8′ by 2.5′, from an office supply store. I then put the 4 feet up on bed risers to elevate the table to 34″, which is perfect for me to cut fabric as I am a quilter and sewer. Really saves on my back!!
I don’t care for pegboard as it gets messy looking, but I do love bulletin boards for notes, pictures, and such. And…..things do get dusty……..so all threads, fabrics, laces, trims, ribbons etc., are stored in plastic containers or drawers. Bookcases are a must!!!
Most of all…….have some fun!!
The higher table is a must, I am wanting a pegboard to hang a few things that are too long to fit on my shelves anyway. Oh an about 8 pairs of scissors, they are constantly disappearing.
Your right about the cluttering, I much prefer things hidden and labelled. Thanks for the terrific input.
I love your ideas and inspiration — functional but with soft, feminine colors and a vintage vibe. I have a project on the back burner to switch out my craft closet with another, bigger closet in my home (an entire craft room is not in the picture. I’m gathering ideas. Thanks!
That craft table would be amazing!! I have seen one made with wood for the top placed on top of those cubbie shelves you can buy at Walmart (or just about any big box store). I can’t wait to see how your room turns out!
I immediately think of the ones at Ikea. Hubs has started to make the table. Unfortunately between my to do list, his job and horse racing season, it’s going to take awhile.

Looks like you have a fabulous vision for your craft room, Leanna. Mr. Frugalista finds large frames often during his thrifting jaunts – head to the south side of town. If you haven’t already heard of it, Home ReUsables is amazing for salvaged trim from demolitions of old homes in the area at a great price. Be prepared to spend a long time browsing.
I had commented that I have a hard time finding frames. Your so supportive sharing your tips with me. I will check it out. He must have loads of fun buying junk and then voila you turn it into treasures.

So many lovely ideas Leanna. I honestly can’t think of anything you missed and personally I love the idea of a pegboard. They’re so versatile and perhaps you can hid it behind a recessed framed chalkboard if it looks to unorganized? Now I can’t wait to see what your craft room will look like once it’s all done.
Hi Michelle: I am excited about my craft room, my only issue is lighting for photography. Hubs put in some different light bulbs in the recessed lights hoping that would do the trick. Its helping, but we are not there yet.

I most certainly will June. Its such a busy time of year, its just starting to whisper that Spring may be coming and its so late in the year I am going to have a hard time squeezing the Spring projects in. I will have to work on the craft room whenever I get time. Thank you for commeting.
I was going to suggest the same thing that Kristine said about finding old frames for the pegboard. I found 2 some years ago at a thrift store and have yet to do anything with them, Maybe I will try that idea. Your craft room is coming along and you have some great ideas. I will never get to that point as I don’t have a basement. 🙁
Finding pretty large frames here is quite difficult. I will keep looking for them. I remember when those big horrific gold frames with velvet pictures inside were the rage. I never did like them. but ohlala to get my hands on those frames now.

Wow–there are some beautiful examples and ideas here! I have been actually very happy with my “Project Room”….but now I am yearning for big tables, big bookcases, and pegboard. For that fancy pegboard frame you show, I have an idea. Look for an old, oversized picture (garage sales or thrift shops) that has a beautiful frame that you can use to frame out your pegboard. I actually am in the middle of building a bulletin board using this approach; will be posting about it in a few weeks!
Hi Kristine: Beautiful frames are so hard to find here as there aren’t that many old houses. Would love to go junking in San Francisco or the East Coast.
