DIY Welcome Sign – Farmhouse Hens Decorate
DIY Wood Farmhouse Sign
It’s really exciting for me to share the latest Farmhouse Hens collaboration, each one of us is sharing a farmhouse style DIY wall art post. I really look forward to seeing what the other Hens are creating and this month is especially exciting for me.
Have you ever fallen in love with a particular craft or decor idea? DIY artwork especially the phrase artwork is my favorite, not so much because I love getting covered with paint, but I cannot wait to have a new sign.

This welcome sign is the largest art piece I have ever made with my cutting machine. I am sharing how to create a larger sign and work with larger vinyl designs.
Supplies
[one-half-first]
1/4 inch plywood sanded and smooth
1 by 2″ lumber
A cutting machine

[one-half]
Sticky vinyl and transfer paper
Espresso paint and white paint

DIY Letter Wood Welcome Sign Tutorial
Prepare the Wood
Cut the plywood to the size you want, this sign is 17 by 34 inches. If your plywood is rough sand it and fill any knots. I purchased smooth plywood so I was able to skip this step.
Cut your 1″ by 2″ lumber. Hubs cut the frame so that the long pieces fit on top of the short pieces.
The long pieces are the same length as the plywood 37″ the short pieces are 15.5″. I suggestStain your plywood and 1″ by 2″ any dark colour you prefer. Let dry.
Design the Wording
Make the page setting 12 by 36″ and turn the view so its easier to read. The text for the word “Welcome” is Arial Unicode MS text with glyphs using size 72. The wording “to our home” is Cambria Math text using font size 238.
The first time I cut the design I did it in one piece like shown. It was very difficult to transfer to the wood as the transfer paper kept sticking to itself. To get around this divide the design into separate sections and line up the vinyl when you’re transferring the vinyl to the wood. I cut the design into “Welc”, “ome”, and “to our home”. It meant repeating the process 3 separate times but the smaller pieces were so much easier to handle.
After your vinyl is cut place the transfer material on top. Slowly peel the transfer paper off while applying the vinyl. Repeat this for the other pieces.
a
Rub the vinyl down making sure it is well secured. Paint the entire surface of the plywood white. Complete two coats letting dry well between coat.
Once dry slowly remove the vinyl revealing the espresso lettering underneath.
Build the Frame
Attach the frame to the front of your artwork using a nail gun or small 1 1/4″ nails from the back so they don’t show.

This sign is s larger than the purchased signs are. not to mention a fraction of the cost It is fairly easy to make as long as you are patient and give the paint enough time to dry.

What a lovely way to welcome guests – its perfect and love the large size too!
Hello Leanna, you did a lovely decoration for hens. It is looking beautiful and attractive. I love it very much. I will try your tips for my entrance. Thanks for sharing.
I love this sign, I enjoy collecting signs. It sure would be good if I knew how to make them.
What a lovely “welcoming” sign to have in your entrance way.
Wow Leanna, that sign is huge and it looks gorgeous!!! Thanks for the tips on how to make a really large sign, that’s going to come in so useful.
I love the simplicity of it – both the look and the message. I also kind of envy you for having such a tastefully decorated and organized home. Some days I feel like I live in a bona fide war zone, lol. Happy if I get to clean the floors…
Thank you Michelle. I really adore temporary artwork and when your swapping it out in different vignettes I absolutely could not afford to buy the large ones.
This is such a great sign! I love the large size & can imagine how costly this would be to buy! Love it!
Your sign looks wonderful. It adds so much warmth and love to your entry and makes anyone coming in feel so welcome.
Thank you very much Debra I wanted it to be welcoming as it should be the first thing you notice when you enter our home.
Beautiful sign Leanna. It is simple and oh so elegant!
Hi Mary. I like the size of the sign and how it provides the backdrop for the vignette. It is one I will be using many times in the front foyer I am sure. Thank you for the feedback.
Your welcome sign turned out so fabulous Leanna!! It’s so much better than a store-bought one and I’m sure it has been made with love!! Love the black against the white!!!
Thank you Sam, I am pretty proud of it and I liked it as the backdrop to my fall decor.
I too love sign and this one is perfect. I love everything about it. Thanks for the vinyl tutorial too.
Hi Denise. I try making signs in different ways with the fancy glyphs on the word Welcome I found it easier to do with vinyl than try and paint the long fine swooshes.
That is just beautiful! I’m definitely going to have to make one!
Our home has a front entrance and I thought the Welcome home sign would be a nice addition, especially for fall.
