Easy DIY Christmas Decorations Banner

White Christmas Banner with wool pom poms and mittens. Easy DIY Christmas decorations or craft idea.

This is a super easy, fast and inexpensive DIY Christmas decoration,  depending on how long you want the banner to be, you can make it for much less than $10.  All the supplies come from the dollar store.   If you don’t shop early you may need to go to more than one store to purchase enough in the same colour, but these were $1 a pair.  Can’t beat the price, and they are soft and cozy looking.

Supplies

To make your own Christmas banner you will need:

Matching dollar store knit mittens (youth size)

Paper snowflakes (optional)

White yarn, crochet hook

Felt snowballs, or small pom poms

Large needle

The length of the banner depends on how many mittens/snowflakes you have.

Start by making a chain that will link the mittens and/or paper snowflakes together.   The distance between each mitten is about 12 inches.

Make the chain.

Chain 50, single crochet twice into the first mitten, chain 50, continue through all the mittens ending with chain 50.  Tie off.

Attach the felt snowballs.

Thread a long piece of yarn onto the embroidery needle.  *Weave through the crochet links about 16 stitches,  sew through a snowball, then back into the chain.  Weave through the next 16 stitches and attach to the next snowball.  Stitch to the mitten.*

Repeat from * until the last mitten.

Weave through 16 chain stitches, attach a snowball, weave through 16 chains stitched, attach the last snowball.  Weave through to the end.  Tie the ends of the stitching thread and the chain thread together at each end.

You can also make the Christmas banner using four mittens and hang them on the end of the bed, or across the window of a little one’s bedroom window.  I like how they add just a little bit of whimsy without being overbearing or heavily decorative.

Thank you, couldn’t imagine knitting all of those. The little stretchy ones were easy to use as well.

  2. These are very cute. Growing up I remember having so many miscellaneous gloves. This would have been a perfect use of them.

Thank you for saying that. We were recently considering updating them this year and I was trying to choose between the stairway and bathrooms. You helped me very much.

Hi Marie. I like this banner because it is light and not overly decorative like the larger formal ones. At least for this year I wanted simple looking decorations. I am happy to hear you like them.

  6. Oh, I like this idea and wondered how to make wool banners. Thanks for the tutorial, Leanna. This is so happening at my house next Christmas!!!

Hi Tuula. I hadn’t thought of keeping them up after the holidays, but I bet I could use them somewhere. Thank you for the suggestion.

  8. This is sooo cute and so creative! I hope our dollar store has these cute white mittens, it would take me forever to knit my own otherwise:) Love this garland. Pinned!

Hi Milena. Thank you for the pin. Little wool mittens or any fabric mitten you like will work as well. As long as the weave is stretchy enough for you to push the crochet hook through.

  9. Oh, so cute!!! I bet walking into your house is simply magical Leanna. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Randi. Thank you. I try to make the house look special without being covered with Christmas stuff. My family really enjoy it.
