Thrift Store Christmas DIY Star Ornaments

These DIY Christmas ornament stars began as very modern-looking stars. I chose them because of their really funky yet obvious star shapes, so fun. They had the Primitives by Kathy tags still on them, and I was happy to get them for 50 cents each. The modern style was rather attractive but I enjoy nostalgic Christmas ornaments or cottage-style ornaments more, so let’s get started with the thrift store Christmas makeover.

The Before

Each Christmas ornament is 6.5″ by 6″ and each has its own fun modern pattern. Each ornament had glitter on the front and very nice wire hangers.

Choosing the Base Christmas Ornament

You could use any flat Christmas ornament you have that you’re not overly fond of to make these DIY Christmas tree ornaments. The printable centers are designed 3.5 inches across, as long as your Christmas ornament is large enough and flat, the rest of the tutorial will work the same.

Paint for the DIY Christmas Ornament Stars

If you choose to make these diy Christmas ornaments you don’t have to use white paint like I did. Cream would work equally as well, or a pretty green or brown. The free bible verse printables have all three colors in them.

Bible Verses for Christmas

To make these DIY Christmas ornaments extra special I looked up some Christmas themed bible verses to place in the free printables. If for whatever reason you choose to make a different printable yourself I have included the biblical references and suggest using Picmonkey or Canva to create your own.

Christmas Ornament Free Printables

There are two different types of biblical verse free Christmas printables you can use for your DIY Christmas ornaments. One set has a printed wreath with a floral arrangement included. The second set is plain with a circle so you can decorate it any way you like. Both the printables are in PNG format with a transparent background, so you can choose any color of background paper you want.

Supplies Used for DIY Christmas Ornament Makeover

Thrift Store Christmas DIY Star Ornaments Instructions

Step 1 – Scrub, Sand, Paint

To prepare the thrift store Christmas ornaments for a makeover I began by giving each one a good scrub in soapy water, then set them aside to dry.

Once dry I sanded the front of each Christmas ornament to remove any existing glitter. I used 120 grit sandpaper and it came off very easily making sure all the glitter was removed and the ornaments were smooth I painted each one with two coats of white latex paint.

After painting I found that all of my stars had paint seeped onto the back side. Before attaching the printables check for paint on the back of your ornament and sand off if needed.

Step 2 – Print & Attach the Free Printable Bible Verses

The printable bible verses come in PNG format so they have no background on them. This will allow you to print them on any color cardstock you want to match your Christmas decor. They are set to be printed in letter size and landscape.

I tested and if you set it to print at normal you get a softer brown colored lettering, using the best quality the print is a dark chocolate brown. I used best.

There are two styles of printables one with embellishment printed in the corner. The second one does not have the embellishment so you can create your own.

After printing out just cut the wreath out as close as possible to the edge.

Apply a layer of Mod Podge over the center of the star, apply the printable, double check the placement, make sure the edges are sealed, and let dry for half an hour.

Step 3 – Adding Glitter

Adding glitter to the ornament not only adds glamour and bling to your ornament it will help camouflage the cut edge of your wreath. Do not apply Mod Podge on top of the bible verse, but add it all over the remaining part of the star. Once the Mod Podge is applied shake a generous amount of iridescent glitter over top of the Mod Podge. Set aside and let dry.

Adding the Embellishments

Adding embellishments is optional, you can use the printable with the floral arrangement on it and skip this part entirely. When choosing embellishments I think its important to look for things at home, then thrifted or dollar tree. None of my embellishments are from the craft store which kept my costs very low. For my Christmas star ornaments, I did the following.

I added two small silver sticks, then two pieces of greenery, the some brown glass leaves (thrift store). I purchased the smallest pinecones I could find at the dollar tree. To make them smaller I broke off the lower bits of the pinecones by hand and then used clippers to remove the bottom half. Once removed I attached the pinecones to the ornament using hot glue. The final touch was a small white fork bow.
