This Black Cat Halloween cake is easy to make once you figure out how to make black icing. Now that I have the black icing recipe done, the rest of this cake is super easy to put together and requires no special equipment or decorating skills.
Black cats are one of my favorite Halloween characters, and this black cat cake is exactly that Black! Its not a chocolate brown cat cake, that just would not do. Unless of course your wanting an adorable cat birthday cake for a favorite cat lover.
My littles aren’t able to go trick or treating this year, their Halloween school parties are canceled etc, so Grama is going to host a party for them. Just because they have to stay in it doesn’t mean Halloween can’t be fun, just a bit different. As the world has enough stress in it this Halloween cake is made to be more adorable then scary. It’s part of my Pink Halloween party series and so far its been lots of fun to put together.
Black Cat Cake Preparation
To make this black cat cake for Halloween you will need:
2 packages of chocolate cake mix, baked in two 8″ cake pans.
1 batch of black buttercream icing
1 pink candy
A licorice cigar
Pink fondant for the ears and tongue.
The base of this cat cake is two large 8 inch layers of chocolate cake. I used two cake mixes. The cake needs to be at least six inches high and cake mixes seem to be getting smaller. Mix up both packages according the instructions, and bake in two 8 inch pans. Let cool.
After the cake is baked make a single batch of black icing.
Assembling the Cake
Once you cake is cooled and the icing is made, layer the cake with the black icing and place a thin crumb coat over the cake. Let sit until the icing of the crumb coat hardens. At least two hours, I left mine in the fridge overnight.
Once the crumb coat is hardened ice the cake. Place a thick layer of icing over the cake, use a spatula to smooth out the sides of the cake as much as possible. Make nice big swirls of icing on the top of the cake to resemble fur. No cake decorating tube needed, simple and easy.
Making the Black Cat Face
The face is made using a pink candy, licorice cigar and pink fondant. I chose to design the face first and then place it on the cake.
Take a large gumball sized piece of fondant and form it into a tongue shape with your fingers. Lay aside.
Cut the candy end off of a licorice cigar and using scissors make two slices towards the middle. Repeat on the other side.
Place the “whiskers” on the side of the cake. Add the pink candy on top, and the little pink tongue underneath.
Making the Ears
Fondant dries and harden quickly when left uncovered. This makes it perfect for making the stand up ears.
Roll a small piece of fondant (about 1/2 cup) until its 1/3 inch thick. Cut out a two inch high triangle. Use the first triangle as a template and cut out the second ear.
Place the fondant on the top of the cake. Let the top of the ears flop over. Hold the ears up using toothpicks . Place your cake in the fridge for about an hour until the fondant hardens.
Once the fondant ears are hardened remove the toothpicks and ice the back and edges of the ears.
If your like me and the chocolate icing tends to get smeared on your work surface, instead of cleaning up any of the excess chocolate from the pink candy nose, or the cake board with a damp cloth, I prefer to finish my cake decorating and then use a little dry vegetable scrubby to quickly remove any of the dry chocolate mishaps. It works super well and you don’t have to fiddle with damp surfaces.
Your cake is ready for cutting as soon as you ice the hardened fondant ears. Place your cat cake on a pretty serving tray, I had a pretty black pedestal tray I used for mine.
This black cat cake recipe is part of my Pink Halloween Party series. I have already completed a super simple Halloween candy buffet, with printables and will soon post some Halloween themed sandwiches, black cat magic wands, pink sparkly cats and some more easy printables you can use as table scatters.
Please let me know what you think of my Pink Halloween theme in the comments.
Happy Halloween Leanna
