Farmhouse Decorations without Wording

For those of you who follow me along my blogging journey, you know of my love and appreciation of horses.  While Christmas decor shopping I did find some beautiful Christmas decorations with barns, but none with farmhouse animals, much less just horses.  I thought about doing some DIY  Christmas ornaments with oink, cluck, neigh, moo and meow, for animal Christmas carolers, but I after doing all the various wall art with the wording I thought there is enough lettering in my decor.

The Christmas ornament backdrops are dollar store decorations, that I painted barn red.  You can cut out your own on fibreboard if you like, but at $1.25 each these ones are cheap enough and save some time.   If you can find a dollar store ornament in your preferred colour you don’t need to paint it.  My photo actually covered the lettering but I wanted barn red.

You can use the same tutorial for any type of photograph you like but mine are gorgeous dapple grey Percherons pulling a sleigh.

How to Make these Farmhouse Christmas Ornaments

Supplies

To make your own you will need:

Wood backdrops, cut out or dollar store ornaments (Make a template)

A photo you love, check out Pixabay, or Pexels.

Jolee’s Easy Image transfer paper

Red acrylic  paint

Muslin or drop cloth

Mod Podge

Iron

Scissors, or ruler and cutting wheel

Twine

Tutorial for DIY Farmhouse Ornaments

To make the backdrop,  paint all sides with two coats of dark red paint, let dry between coats.

Find the picture you like, here is the one I used.

Size it to fit the backdrop my pictures are 2.5″ by 4″  I used flip your image in Word so that it’s a mirror image.   If your backdrop is the same size as mine here is the PDF  already flipped and sized. 

Insert the transfer paper into your printer making sure the picture will print on the shiny side.

Print your photos and trim off the outside paper.

Iron the muslin or drop cloth or another cotton.    Place the printed transfer, picture side down.  Press with a hot iron and no steam.  Hold the iron for at least a minute.

Let the fabric cool completely, and then pull off the backing, to reveal your transferred photo.

As my picture images are square edged they sides look really abrupt somehow.   To soften the edges pull off some of the outside threads to make the edge tattered.  You can see the tattered edge in the next photo.

Add mod podge to the back of your fabric, place, and press onto the wood.  I was careful not to get mod podge on the photo side.  I am not sure that it would affect the photo, but why risk it.

Decorate with twine and miniature sleigh bells.  Hang with twine.

I really like this process for making DIY Christmas ornaments.  The variations are endless with different pictures and paint colours and I really like that I can have as many coordinating decorations I want in the style I want.
