Vegetable Bin Makeover
Did you ever have a great functional piece that you loved and hated. This is the case with this vegetable bin. The functionality is perfect, it is the right size, its hand made, its useful, I adore the chicken wire and I loath the way it looks.
This piece is not really a find, I paid full price for it at a gift shop and hid it in the pantry of our old house. Unfortunately it did not fit in the pantry of this house so I hid it downstairs and quit using it.

Vegetable Bin Refurbishing
The dark blue is a stain that may leech through the paint, after removing all the hardware it got a a good scrubbing. I let the wood dry thoroughly before applying a thick coating of primer sealer.
The hardware was distressed to look rusted. Using sandpaper I removed the rust paint by hand. The hardware looks a bit like a star so I chose to keep it. We still had a bit of gold spray paint left over so the hardware got painted gold instead of nickel. I think its looks alright that way.
After the primer dried the wood was sanded smooth with 120 grit sand paper and then I put on two coats of white or grey paint, sanding and letting it dry between coats.
After the paint was all dried, I gave it a final light sanding and reassembled the vegetable bin.

I considered stenciling Veggies, or transferring some antique labels to the bin, but decided I like just as it is. No longer hid away in a closet or downstairs, its clean and crisp and functional and pretty enough to sit beside the pantry to store vegetables.

Storage is always an issue for me. With blogging its even more so. I have so much stuff lately.
Sometimes you have to just toss. I tried to give it away but they kept forgetting to take it. I guess it was meant to be mine.

Hi Debra: Well worth the couple of hours work. I wish I had finished it much earlier. I think white is a better colour because I want anything I store food in to be bright and clean looking.
