DIY Luxury Pillowcases
You really can have the loveliest of things with a little bit of DIY effort. There are some exquisite gorgeous linen shops locally and the linens are stunning, but the prices startled me. I cannot imagine allowing a guest to sleep on $110 pillowcase. But with an hour of my time and some cotton summer blouse material, they are going to sleep on what looks like a $110 dollar pillowcase.

These are so simple to make. Buy some cotton blouse material with the peekaboo edging. Wash and iron the material. Place it good sides together. Use your favourite pillowcase as a template add an inch around and cut out the material. I will break it down into steps for you.
Homemade Pillowcase from Lace Embossed Material

You will need:
2.5 metres (3 yards) of lace embossed material.
Matching thread.
Spare Pillowcase (for pattern)
Cut the Pillowcase Material
Start by washing and ironing your material. Pin the material good sides together matching the lace pattern as shown in the next picture.

Once you have your material pinned together and square, place a pillowcase (use as a pattern), on top of the material. Make sure you have one inch around the pillowcase for seam allowance. Pin the pillowcase securely to the material and then cut.

Sew the Pillowcase

Leave the pattern pillowcase on the material. Place the sewing machine foot as close as possible to the edge of the pillowcase and sew three seams. The opening of the pillowcase is the lace edge.

Finish the Seams
Finish the seams with a serger, a zig-zag stitch or with a rolled seam edge. Usually, I use a zig zag stitch to seal my seam edge. As I am making ‘luxury” pillowcases I took the extra effort and roll edged my seams.

Roll edge seams are simple, you turn the very edge of your seam over, press and then turn it over again and then sew along the edge. This hides and controls any threads that may come loose along the cut materials edge.

If you can’t find the embossed material you can purchase some percale sheets and add your own lace.a
Beautiful Lace Edged Pillowcase
These only take ten minutes to put together and make a big difference to a plain pillowcase.
Wash and iron the pillowcase and the lace.
Start at one seam allowance, leave the end of your lace 1″ past the edge.

Sew right along the top edge of the lace and the panel seam of the pillowcase. Sew all the way around.
When you get back to the start fold the end of the lace “under” and complete the seam.
Cut off the excess lace. Sew from the top of the lace to the edge of the lace to seal the end. It makes a very elegant edge.
The before and after shows the difference ten minutes can make.

Backstory
White linens are really easy to keep clean, you can soak them in bleach if nothing else works. Recently we had guests stay over and they ruined my brand new pillow shams by sleeping on them with fresh hair dye. I was never able to remove the stains, now the pillow shams are washed out from my efforts. These pillowcases are the replacement.

Our guest room in the summer is bright in white and aqua. In addition to the lacy pillowcase we have these crochet linen cushion and DIY European cushions.
