DIY Cushion Covers for Fall
Decorative chickens are such a fun feature for Fall decorating. I have no idea why I swoon over chicken decor, since I am not a fan of the actual bird.
Over the years I have collected various kinds of Fall decor that features chickens, so this year I am adding two simple DIY cushion covers to my collection.

While shopping in the USA in July I was able to find this beautiful orange and teal patterned fabric. I bought two yards which gives me enough fabric for one large patterned cushion with enough fabric left over for the simple appliques on a second cushion.
The DIY cushion covers are easy sew envelope cushion covers that require no patterns, zippers or buttons. Today’s post is for two large oblong cushion covers.
How to Sew Two Coordinated Oblong DIY Cushion Covers
Large Oblong forms (I love the ones at IKEA 26″ by 16″)
2 yards of Fall patterned fabric
1 yard of plain cushion fabric
Wonder Under interfacing
Thread in a matching colour.

CUTTING THE MATERIAL
Make sure your fabric is all preshrunk and ironed.
Cut the material for the front of your cushion. Make it 2 inches wider and two inches longer than your cushion cover (mine is 28″ by 18″). Th pattern on this material is very distinct so I made sure the largest pattern was in the middle before measuring from the center outwards.
Cut two pieces of material for the back of your cushion. Make these pieces 2 inches wider and five inches shorter that the height of your cushion cover (28″ by 13). This will give you enough material for the envelope and the folded seam allowance.
Sew all the edges of your material to prevent threads from unraveling. I do not own a serger so I do this with a zigzag stitch.
Make the rolled edge seams on the two back pieces.
Place your material good side down. Fold over the long side 1/2 inch and press. Fold over another inch and press again. Sew a seam along the edge. Repeat with the other back piece.
Place the front piece of the material good side UP. Place the second piece of material on top good side Down. If your material has a pattern make sure the pattern of the back pieces is in the same direction as the front fabric.
p
Pin the long seams together and sew a 1″ seam. Check to make sure your fabric is the way you want.
h
Pin the two side seams overlapping the two back panels and sew.
Turn your cushion right side out, use your fingers to push out the corners. Turn right side out and iron.d
ADDING THE APPLIQUE
Make the Chicken Templates
My chicken templates came from the online Silhouette Design Store. Design ID. 79649. Do a search using the design ID to find the template. Once purchased resize to 8″ high and print out the templates onto regular paper.
Adding the Applique
You will need a small piece of wonder-under interfacing, fabric and the printed chicken template.
Layer the interfacing and the fabric. Cover with the chicken template pin together and cut out. Repeat with the other templates.
Keeping the pins on the chicken templates cut/tear off the paper backing of the interfacing. Place interface side down onto the front of your cushion cover and pin into place.
Once you are sure your satisfied with the placement of the chickens, iron into place with a hot dry iron. This melts the interfacing. Remove the paper cover and iron again. Remove any wayward threads with small scissors.
My sewing machine does not have an applique stitch setting so I use a small zigzag stitch to sew around all the chickens. Typically I consider this step optional but with the bright contrasting colours on these cushions it looks much nicer sewn.
