Pumpkin Spice Recipe

This homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe is very easy to make, and convenient for when pumpkin spice everything season hits. Having this pumpkin spice mix is so handy made ahead for baking, or to sprinkle on top of roasted vegetables, or homemade lattes. I find myself happily grabbing this pumpkin spice mixture with gladness instead of picking out and measuring all the individual spices.

Spicy and aromatic, this is a classic mixture that often contains ingredients you already have on hand. Pumpkin spice is made up of a mixture of 4 different spices, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. I never used pumpkin spice mix in recipes until a couple of years ago when modern recipes started to call for it instead of a combination of the individual spices. Figuring out the equivalencies got to be a hassle so now I make up my own pumpkin spice and skip doing all that math.

As an old school classic cook I was most resistent to purchase yet another spice mix, but by making my own and seeing how much handier it is to have a premade mix I wish I had done it eons ago.

All you need is 4-5 spices a small bowl, and a jar to hold your homemade pumpkin spice. It takes 2 minutes to put the pumpkin spice together. So much quicker than adding the separate spices to every recipe.

Ingredients for Pumpkin Spice

3 1/2 tbsp Cinnamon
2 1/2 tsp Ginger
2 1/2 tsp Nutmeg
1 1/2 tsp Allspice
Note: If you like cloves you can reduce the allspice to 1 tsp and add 1/2 tsp cloves.

Cheaper spices tend to be milder lacking some of the flavour of their more expensive counterparts.

Storing Homemade Pumpkin Spice

Transfer your homemade pumpkin spice into a small, airtight container. Store the pumpkin spice just as you would for any other spice blend. Stored properly the spice will last up to six months. If using a mason jar just transfer the pumpkin spice to the jar with a spoon. If you want to put it in a spice jar, I suggest using a funnel and transferring the spice mixture a little bit at a time.
