How to Make Cookies with Dough

How to make cookies with dough or what cookie flavour do they want has been asked by every Mom when faced with a week of school lunch preparation. This basic cookie dough with endless cookie flavours is the ONE recipe I used repeatedly for school lunches. You mix up one basic cookie dough recipe, divide it up and then add the cookie flavours. So many easy to add cookie flavours to try like chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, raisin cookies, butterscotch pretzel, sea salt caramel and many more.

Its the perfect basic cookie dough recipe for lunches, everyone can have their favorite with very little extra work for the baker.  

Most drop cookies have the same basic cookie dough recipe with a little flavour variation added into the cookie dough at the end.  I bet you can list the basic ingredients of cookie dough, but I will share them with the measurements and method. This plain cookie dough recipe is large, it makes 4 dozen large cookies into four cookie flavours.  You can easily half it and make only 2 cookie flavours.

Basic Cookie Dough Recipe

Mix up this large basic cookie dough recipe first.

1 pound butter

1 cup white sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

4 cups flour

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

Place the butter into a  bowl and beat on high until its light and fluffy. (1 min)

Add white sugar and brown sugar beating very well after each addition.

Once the white sugar and brown sugar have been mixed into the butter, add the eggs and vanilla.

Beat the basic cookie dough until light and fluffy, it takes 3-5 minutes.

In a separate bowl mix together the flour, baking soda, and salt.

Combine the dry ingredients into the butter mixture. Mixing until just combined

Your basic cookie dough is now finished.

On to the yummy fun part.

One Cookie Recipe Many Cookie Flavours

For this post I put together 11 different cookies flavours you can add to make multiple cookie flavours. The basic idea is to grab whatever cookie flavours you like, add them to one basic cookie dough and you end up with many different cookies.

Here are some different ingredient ideas; chocolate chips, peanut butter, coconut, pecans, peanuts, oatmeal, cranberries, almonds, skor bits, butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, pretzel bits, rice krispies, cornflakes and any other family favorites you may think of.

11 cups of different cookie flavours like chocolate chips, peanut butter, coconut, pecans, walnuts, raisings, skor bits, pretzel bits, cranberries etc. Each cookie flavour is shown in a pretty lilac coloured paper cup.

Take about two cups of the basic cookie dough, place in a bowl (I reused the flour mixing bowl to save on dishes), add up to 1 cup of goodies of your choice. You can add any variety of different cookie flavours that appeal to you.a

Different Cookie Flavours to Try

For a simple sugar cookie, leave the dough plain,  roll into balls and then roll in sugar.

1/3 cup chocolate chips, 1/3 cup pretzels, 1/3 up Skor pieces

1/3 cup peanut butter, 1/3 cup coconut, 1/3 cup peanuts

1/3 cup chocolate chips, 1/3 cup raisins, 1/3 cup Rice Krispies

1/2 cup Skor bits, 1/2 cup cornflakes cereal

1/3 cup chocolate chips, 1/3 cup raisins, 1/3walnuts or pecans

1/2 cup crushed pretzels, 1/2 cup Skor pieces

1/2 cup caramel chips, 1/2 cup crushed pretzels

1/2 cup peanut butter chips, 1/2 chocolate chips

1/2 cup dried cranberries, 1/2 coconut, roll into balls and then into sugar

Each cookie variation makes a dozen big cookies.  

These are Caramel Pretzel cookies made with caramel chips and pretzels.

Take the basic cookie recipe base add caramel chips and crushed pretzels.  Mix well,  scoop out onto a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for about 7-10 minutes at 350 degrees.

Or you can roll them into ball like I did these peanut butter and coconut flavoured variation.  The following cookies are peanut butter, with peanuts and coconut. (Reader input on the peanut butter addition. When adding peanut butter if the dough appears too soft to you, add a bit more flour.)

Baking the Multiple Cookie Flavours

Once you have the basic dough made, preheat your oven to 350F. Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper, and start mixing your individual varieties.

Bake each variety of cookie for 7 -10 minutes until golden brown and chewy.

Final Thoughts

The varieties are endless, use what you have.  This recipe was very helpful when I had a bunch of boys coming in after football practice, or when I had to figure out weekly lunches on a budget.  Mix together the basic cookie dough and toss in whatever you have in the cupboard.

One Basic Cookie Dough Many Cookie Flavours

Make one large recipe of cookie dough, then divide it up and put in a variety of different cookie flavours. You end up with a wide assortment of cookie flavours from one dough. Great for gatherings, or weekly lunch preparation.

Ingredients

Basic Cookie Dough

  • 1 pound butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt

Yummy Variations

  • ½ cup each chocolate chips, pretzels, Skor pieces
  • ½ cup each peanut butter, coconut, peanuts (add extra dry ingredients, flour, nuts etc.)
  • ½ cup each chocolate chips,raisins, Rice Krispies
  • ½ cup each Skor bits, Cornflake Cereal
  • ½ cup each chocolate chips, raisins, walnuts or pecans

Instructions

Basic Cookie Dough

  • Add white sugar and brown sugar beating very well after each addition.
  • Add eggs one at a time and beat well after each egg.
    A large mixer bowl of whipped basic cookie dough with butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla.
  • Add the vanilla, and beat well.
  • In a separate bowl mix together the flour, soda, and salt.
    The dry ingredients from a one dough many cookie flavours recipe.
  • Combine the dry ingredients into the butter mixture.

Cookie Flavour Variations

  • Take about two cups of the cookie dough and place in a bowl (the used flour bowl works fine and no extra dishes), add up to 1 of goodies of your choice. This is a general guide, I guessed the amount of the dough. I took approximately 1/4 of the cookie dough base placed it in a separate bowl. Then add the measured variations.)

  • If adding peanut butter, if your dough appears to soft to you, add a little bit more flour and whatever dry ingredient your using. For example, Peanut butter and coconut, or peanut butter and peanuts.
