Advocaat, advocaat snowballs, and adovocaat eggnog are traditional Dutch treats I grew up with. My adoptive Dad is Dutch and he would buy Advocaat and allow me one snowball cocktail every Christmas. I remember this advocaat recipe from the 80s and its a much loved treat in my home. Whether you want to make a Snowball cocktail with the Advocaat, or drink it as special eggnog, its a flavour you need to try.
Advocaat is a Dutch Egg Liqueur and some recipes make it using just egg yolks, the result is a very thick Advocaat that can be eaten with a spoon like a dessert. This recipe uses whole eggs including the egg white, which gives it a thinner consistency.
Ingredients for Advocaat
1 3/4 cups sugar
4 cups gin (or vodka)
1 tsp vanilla
Whisk your eggs, then the sugar and vanilla. Make sure its blended very well. Transfer to the top pan of a double boiler. Add the sugar and blend very well.
Place in a double boiler over boiling water, slowly add the gin and cook stirring constantly. Cook your Advocaat until it thickens about 10-15 minutes. Be patient you don’t want to advocaat to boil, as you will loose the flavour of the gin. Once its thick almost like pudding, pour it into a bottle.
You will see Advocaat recipes that just use egg yolks, this recipe uses the whole egg so the Advocaat comes out thinner. If you want to thin it out more, place it in a blender and add a bit of cream.
How to Store the Advocaat Liqueur
Advocaat can be stored for up to a month in the fridge. Although easily recognizable by its pretty yellow colour I have made an Advocaat label you can download and print.
Advocaat can be served in a small glass with a little whipped cream on top. I love it on top of ice cream, or blended into whipped cream. My favorite is way to serve Advocaat is in a Snowball Cocktail.
Snowball Cocktail Recipe
A very simple to make cocktail that does not require any fancy technique.
2 oz Advocaat
Tbsp lime juice or Lime Cordial (optional)
6 oz of 7 up or Sprite
Snow Ball Drink Instructions
Place 2 oz of Advocaat in a tall glass.
Add 6 oz of 7 up or Sprite and stir well.
Add ice cubes, and serve.
Some people will comment to add Brandy, my dutch adopted Dad never did, so I don’t either, feel free to add a dash, but I have never tried it that way.
You can drink Advocaat straight as it is, place some whipping cream on top, or add a little milk to thin it down.
If you love liquers I have two other really good liqueur recipes I have been making for years and years. I have also included some simple drink recipes you can use them with.
