Popcorn Halloween Balls with Marshmallow

Marshmallow Popcorn Ball Ghosts

Popcorn Halloween balls with loads of sweetly delicious chewy marshmallow is one of those seasonal treats that we look for each Halloween. A perfect sweet and salty treat that Mom’s can make in endless variety.

Your kids are going to love these popcorn Halloween ball ghosts. This year our Halloween is all about not so ghastly ghosts. So I created these little marshmallow popcorn balls to look like ghosts, and used pink candy popcorn to make them pretty, and really easy.

Of course you can make them with regular popcorn, and if you prefer salty sweet flavours I suggest using regular home popped microwave popcorn. Either way they will a cute and fun gooey ghostly popcorn Halloween dessert.

Marshmallow Popcorn Balls Ingredients

6 cups of pink popcorn (or regular)

1/3 cup butter

1 tsp vanilla

30 large marshmallows (24 oz bag)

1 pkg white candy melts

1 tsp vegetable or coconut oil (optional)

24 eyeball candies

Pink and white fondant (optional)

How to Make Popcorn Halloween Balls

Butter a large bowl and add 6 cups of prepopped pink popcorn. Or make your own. Take out a large piece of parchment paper and set aside.

In a large microwave safe bowl add 1/3 cup of butter. Place in microwave to melt.

Make sure you use a large enough bowl, the marshmallows expand quite a bit in the microwave so you want the marshmallows to not take up half the bowl.

Remove the melted butter from the microwave. Add the marshmallows to the bowl and stir to coat the marshmallows.

Place the marshmallows in the microwave uncovered and cook for 1 minute on high temp. Your marshmallows should be very fluffy, but not necessarily melted.

Use an oven glove to remove the marshmallows as the bowl is likely to be hot from the melting candy.

Stir the semi melted marshmallows with a spoon or spatula. They will become a smooth almost icing type of consistency. If they aren’t melted enough recook for another 30 seconds. Then stir. You may need to repeat the process depending on the power of your microwave.

Add the vanilla and stir.

Pour the melted marshmallows over the popcorn balls. Stir to cover the popcorn completely.

Use a half cup measuring cup to guestimate the size of each popcorn ball. Butter your hands, then form the popcorn into balls with your hands. Be careful not to get burned, you may need to give the marshmallow in the popcorn a little time to cool before handling.

Place each popcorn on the parchment paper to cool completely.

Dipping in Candy Melts

Melt you candy melts according to the directions on the package. I used white Wilton brand candy melts.

Add the package of melts to a completely dry bowl. Microwave on medium for 1 minute. Stir, and then repeat with 30 second intervals until melted. If there are still little bits of candy unmelted leave it to sit for a minute to give the hot candy time to melt it.

If you find the candy is kind of thick add a tsp of cooking oil or coconut oil to the mixture, then stir.

Dunk the top of each popcorn ball into the melted candy. Turn over and repeat with the next popcorn ball.

I did six popcorn balls, and then stopped to attach the eyeballs to the semi soft chocolate. Then returned to dipping and doing the eyeballs on the second six.

I found dipping the popcorn balls to be a rather haphazard process. If the popcorn ball didn’t cover with the candy melts I used a knife and applied it to the stop of the popcorn like icing.

Once dipped place on the parchment paper until the candy melts harden.

I think the ghost look excellent just dipped, but you can also embellish them with a bit of fondant in a flower like I did. I laughed when I was taking these pictures as the little faces have character. Is it just me or does the little popcorn ball I placed on top kind of remind you of Kermit the Frog?

To make the fondant flowers I just tolled the fondant thin and then cut it out with a flower shaped cutter.

Here is a another quick idea to embellish the ghosts without using fondant. I quickly took two of the ghosts as an example for you. I sat the ghosts in a pretty halloween themed cupcake liner, and then added a fun spooky gummy spider like a barette.

Popcorn Halloween Balls with Marshmallow

Fun popcorn Halloween balls made with marshmallows and then decorated to look like not so spooky ghosts. This is a fun easy to eat Halloween dessert kids are sure to love. You can make them with boxed pink popcorn or pop your own. Either way its an easy no bake Halloween dessert.
